Capital
of Lithuania, "the Land of Amber," for much
of its history, Vilnius played a significant role as Lithuania
and the Baltic States moved to independence from the Soviet
Union.
With
a central Old Town which is easy to explore on foot, visitors
can visit St. Peter and Paul Church, Vilnius Cathedral,
Mediniku Gate, and Gediminas Tower on Castle Hill. Or,
use the city to explore Lithuania by car: Trakai - the
capital of Lithuania during Grand Duchy days with its
island castle, Kaunas, the Hill of Crosses, the sculpture
park at Bernotai - the geographical center of Europe,
and even the Lithuanian coast at Palanga are great getaways.
